We visited Royalton Bavaro Punta Cana over Christmas 2025, one of the busiest times of the year. This review covers everything from arrival experience to dining, beaches, activities, and whether Diamond Club is worth it.

Royalton Bavaro shares facilities with Royalton Splash and Royalton Punta Cana, which adds both variety and crowding depending on the time of year.

Arrival Experience (Christmas Eve)

We flew JetBlue from JFK Terminal 5 on a busy Christmas Eve and arrived late in the evening.

One quirk worth knowing: the air conditioning was impossible to control â freeze or turn off.

Important: Beach chairs were claimed early â often by 8 AM. And if you walk north half a mile up the beach, conditions change â worth exploring.

We spent Christmas week at Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun — the newer Marriott all-inclusive sitting right next door to the older Royalton Riviera Cancun. The video’s verdict is right in the title: great pool and water park, average service. Here is the full walkthrough, from check-in to the beach to the slides.

Location: Five Minutes from the Airport

The location is a genuine plus: about a five-minute drive from the Cancun airport, and the video notes the stay was bookable for 336,000 Marriott points. It sits just down the beach from Dreams Natura Resort.

Check-In: Slick Lobby, Slow Process

The reception area looks slick, but check-in takes a while — there is no personalized seated check-in with a welcome drink. And as a Marriott Platinum guest during Christmas week, there was no upgrade.

The Room: Far from Everything

We were put in Building 12, the furthest from reception — a long walk. The room itself is fine, but the service details grate: the minibar is included, yet you have to flag down a guy with his cart for refills, and they don’t do a great job restocking water and coffee.

The Beach: Calm but Murky

The beach is calm thanks to an offshore barrier, but the water is not the clear turquoise you picture in the Caribbean — it is murky, with some seaweed at the shore (clean once you walk in). They do run a tractor to clear the beach occasionally. Drink service on the beach is spotty, so tip.

The Pool: The Highlight

The huge main pool is comfortably warm and has a swim-up bar — it is the social heart of the resort. One catch: the only hot tubs are reserved for Diamond guests.

The Water Park: The Main Attraction

The water park is the reason to book here — plenty of thrills, with big slides packed into the corner of the property.

Minimum height is 1.2m, but the slides are quite challenging for younger ones.

Sports: Tennis and Pickleball

There is one tennis court and one pickleball court, bookable on the app — first come, first served after 6pm.

Food: Buffet, Room Service, and À La Cartes

The buffet didn’t win us over — the stir fry station was the preferred pick. Room service runs on a limited menu, and the order note quoted a 75–85 minute delivery time.

There is an Italian restaurant option for sit-down lunch, a Grazie to-go counter for pizza pickup near the water park (they kept running out of cheese), and desserts including a chocolate flan that was really a mousse — the tiramisu was the safer choice.

Bars: Smoking Cocktails

The bar program has some theater — we tried a smoking old fashioned, and the caramelized apple with rosemary smoke is the signature-style pour.

Evening Entertainment: If You Can Call It That

Nightly entertainment runs on the main stage by the water park, but it didn’t impress — the video’s caption says it best: “if you can call it that.”

The Verdict

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun delivers exactly what its title promises: a great pool and water park in a convenient, points-bookable package — with average service throughout. The beach is the weak link (murky, seaweed at the shore), the rooms are far from the action, and service touches like minibar refills and room-service timing lag. But for a family that lives in the pool and on the slides, the core product is strong.

We took a family vacation at The Reserve at Paradisus Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic — an all-inclusive where everything is geared toward families with kids. Paradisus is a massive resort complex in Punta Cana, and the Reserve section is its family-focused corner. Here is what our stay looked like, from the beach to the kiddie water park to the nightly acrobat shows.

The complex is big enough that they run golf carts to help guests get around — the central terraces and plazas stay lively well into the night.

The Reserve Section: Set Up for Kids

We stayed, with kids, in the Reserve section. From the start it is clear this part of the resort is designed for families — our room came with kids’ toiletries laid out on the bed: little toothbrushes, bath products, and extras for the youngest travelers.

A Ton of Options for Kids: The Kiddie Water Park

The headline act for younger kids is the kiddie water park — a shallow splash area with small slides, spray features, and tipping buckets, ringed by loungers and umbrellas. Ours could have spent the whole trip here.

The Pool: Inflatable Obstacle Course

The pool had its own draw: a make-shift inflatable water obstacle course floating in the main pool — climbing triangles, balance beams, and a slide — that drew a constant crowd of kids racing through it.

Kids’ Activities: Water Balloon Fights and Climbing

Beyond the water, the resort runs organized kids’ activities through the day. One afternoon brought water balloon fights on the lawn — pure chaos, huge hit with the kids — and there is a climbing tower for the more adventurous.

Nightly Entertainment: Stage Shows and Acrobats

Nights at Paradisus are genuinely entertaining. There are lots of nightly entertainment options — stage shows with dancers and costume acts — and the standout was the Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics: aerial hoop and acrobat performances staged in the resort’s lit colonnade, drawing big crowds.

Dinner: Reservable Restaurants and Teppanyaki

Dinner here is reservable — there are multiple à la carte dinner options around the resort. The crowd favorite for our family was teppanyaki: the chef cooks the whole meal on the grill in front of you, and the menu runs through chicken, beef, salmon, shrimp, and tofu options with fried rice, appetizers like California rolls, and desserts.

The Verdict

The Reserve at Paradisus Punta Cana is a family all-inclusive that earns its name: a kiddie water park and inflatable pool course for the days, organized kids’ activities like water balloon fights, and at night, genuinely impressive Cirque-style acrobatics plus reservable dinners like teppanyaki. It is built for families with kids — and on that promise, it delivers.

St James’s Club & Villas, Antigua: Two Gorgeous Beaches, Subpar Food

We spent Christmas week at St James’s Club & Villas, an all-inclusive on the southern end of Antigua in St Paul’s, booked as a hotel plus airport transfer package through Costco Travel. The verdict is right there in the title: phenomenal beaches and terrific tennis, but the food never got above mediocre. Here’s how the week went, stop by stop.

Getting there

We flew JetBlue out of JFK on Christmas Eve - a crowded airport, but a smooth arrival into sun-kissed Antigua. The airport itself was clean and empty on arrival, and since the Costco Travel booking included pick-up and drop-off, getting to the resort was painless: a drive past the Viv Richards Stadium, then down the hill into the resort.

The resort and the rooms

The resort is spread out, with beachfront rooms on the ocean side, an activities desk, a kids club, and reception all connected by palm-lined paths. Our balcony looked straight out over the beach - the kind of view that makes you forgive a lot.

The two beaches

The highlights of the resort are unquestionably the beaches - two of them, one on each side.

Mamora Bay is the calm one: white sand, no waves, and ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and other still-water activities. We spent most of our beach time here.

Coco Beach is the ocean side: a gorgeous long stretch with minimal waves, though with some seaweed along the shore.

The food

The all-inclusive dining was the weak link. The resort has several restaurants: 11/Eleven and Coco (open for lunch and dinner), Rainbow Garden (the better pick for breakfast, with a big buffet spread), and Docksider, which has a casual vibe on most nights.

One night they set up dining on the beach, and another night was a barbecue-style cookout with alcoholic jello shots served out of a canoe - fun in concept. But the food itself was consistently underwhelming. The turkey burger at lunch was fine; the piri-piri chicken was dry and overcooked. “Subpar food” is exactly what it was.

Activities and oddities

There’s a small tortoise sanctuary tucked into the grounds - easy to miss, worth the detour.

One afternoon we spotted Jeff Bezos’s sailing yacht Koru gliding past off the coast - hard to miss a sailboat that size. Christmas Day brought Santa arriving by boat, with treats for the kids on the beach. Evenings had their own entertainment, including a magician one night. The Pink Panther jeep is one of the island tours you can book from the resort.

Tennis

The tennis was genuinely terrific: multiple courts with artificial turf, aerial views don’t do them justice. The only complaint was that the tennis equipment wasn’t in great shape - bring your own racquet if you’re serious.

Heading home

On the way out we cleared immigration at ANU and spent the wait in the Executive Lounge, which has a lovely outdoor terrace. Then a sunset takeoff and goodbye to paradise.

Practical notes

Booked via: Costco Travel, hotel plus airport transfer package (pick-up/drop-off included).
Beaches: Mamora Bay (calm, white sand, great for kayaking and paddleboarding) and Coco Beach (ocean side, gorgeous, some seaweed).
Rooms: Beachfront rooms are on the ocean side; our balcony faced the beach.
Food: All-inclusive, but set expectations low - Rainbow Garden for breakfast, Docksider for casual dinners.
Tennis: Terrific artificial-turf courts; bring your own equipment.
Bottom line: Phenomenal beaches, good tennis, subpar food.

The Water Park: A Key Attraction

On the Beach: Hobie Cat Sails

Out on the beach, you can get a ride on a Hobie Cat — the video shows a crewed catamaran sail off Grace Bay, with the resort’s buildings lining the shore behind. Turquoise water, sail up, and what the video calls an exhilarating run.

The Pools: Dance Sessions and a Swim-Up Bar

The main pool is the social center — during the video they run a pool dance session with families following along in the water. A swim-up bar sits built into the tower at the pool’s edge, so drinks never require leaving the water.

The Kids’ Pool

A separate shallow pool is set up for the younger kids, with small slides, a colorful sun shade, and loungers right at the water’s edge — all easy to supervise.

We spent Christmas 2022 at Royalton Splash Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic — a big, lively all-inclusive that is built around one thing: keeping the whole family entertained. Here is what the resort looks like, from the beach to the water park to the evening shows.

Two Resorts in One

Royalton Splash sits next to Royalton Punta Cana, and the two share the beachfront. The setup is simple: Royalton Punta Cana has the beach, and the water park is in Royalton Splash.

The Beach: Fun, but Not Calm

The beach is beautiful — wide, white sand, turquoise water — but it is a fun beach, not a calm one. The surf runs strong here, so it is better for playing in the waves than for floating peacefully.

The Pool: Foam Parties

The main pool is the social heart of the resort. During our stay they threw a pool foam party — music, foam cannons, and a packed pool. If you like a lively pool scene, this is it.

The Water Park

The water park is the main reason to pick this resort over its quieter neighbors. There are big slides — including a tall yellow raft slide the kids rode again and again — plus a wave pool for bobbing around.

Evening Entertainment

Nights bring stage shows for the kids — during our Christmas stay there was a Minions show — followed by evening entertainment for the adults, with a DJ and sing-along screens.

Food: Plan Ahead for Dinner

Breakfast was solid, with made-to-order plates like eggs with guacamole and fresh toppings.

One practical tip: for the à la carte restaurants, make reservations — or line up at 6pm. Bella Cucina, the Italian restaurant, drew a crowd every evening.

Kids Club

The kids club runs organized activities through the day — trampolines, games, and supervised play that gave the adults a break.

The Verdict

Royalton Splash is a high-energy family resort: a real water park, a party atmosphere at the pool, a lively (if rough) beach, and plenty of evening entertainment. It is not the place for a quiet couples’ getaway — but for a family Christmas with kids who want slides, foam, and shows, it delivers exactly what it promises.
