This guide breaks everything down by when you need to book it.

🗓️ 91+ Days Before Your Trip

🏨 Book Your Disney Hotel (<$300/night)

We chose Disney Pop Century Resort, part of Disney’s value category.

You can splurge on deluxe resorts, but we spend very little time in the room — so value made more sense.

Why Pop Century worked for us:

Early park entry perks
Access to Lightning Lane booking advantages
Can accomodate familes of 4 with a queen and a murphy bed - beds were very comfortable
Bus service to Magic Kingdom
🚠 Skyliner access to Hollywood Studios (huge for Star Wars fans)

We booked on Priceline via TopCashback which was the best deal I could find at the time (better than booking direct with Disney.

We were able to link the priceline reservation to the MyDisneyExperience app easily.

During our recent winter visit to the Ötztal Valley, we stayed at Die Berge Lifestyle-Hotel Sölden, a stylish four-star property known for its spectacular heated rooftop pool and convenient location near the ski lifts.

Here’s what the experience was like.

First Impressions

The hotel has a modern alpine aesthetic—clean architecture, lots of glass, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Despite being right in the center of town, it feels calm and relaxed, with easy access to everything you need for a ski holiday.

The lobby and common areas are sleek and contemporary, setting the tone for a comfortable stay focused on both skiing and relaxation.

The Room: Double Room L with Balcony

Our room was the Double Room L with Balcony, and it struck a great balance between style and practicality.

Highlights included:

Spacious layout with modern alpine décor
Large, comfortable bed after long ski days
Private balcony with mountain views
Clean and functional bathroom design

The balcony is a particularly nice touch in winter—stepping outside and seeing the snow-covered Alps first thing in the morning is unforgettable.

Breakfast Worth Waking Up For

Breakfast at the hotel was excellent and well above the typical ski-resort buffet.

The spread included:

Perfect Location for Skiers

One of the best things about the hotel is its location in the heart of Sölden.

The hotel makes skiing logistics easy with:

Dining and Parking

Although the hotel offers breakfast, there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance for dinner.

Parking is also available at the hotel, which is helpful if you’re driving through the Ötztal Valley.

A Great Base for Exploring the Region

While most visitors come to ski in Sölden, the surrounding region also offers incredible alpine destinations such as Obergurgl—another beautiful ski village further up the valley.

That makes Die Berge a great base for exploring multiple ski areas during your trip.

Final Thoughts

Die Berge Lifestyle-Hotel combines modern design, a fantastic location, and one of the best heated outdoor pools in the Austrian Alps.

Zermatt is one of the most iconic ski destinations in the Alps, with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn and access to some of the best skiing in Europe. On our recent winter trip, we stayed at Matterhorn FOCUS Design Hotel, a 4-star superior property that blends modern alpine design, incredible mountain views, and a relaxing spa experience.

If you’re planning a ski vacation in Zermatt and want somewhere stylish, comfortable, and convenient to the lifts, this hotel is definitely worth considering.

Arrival in Zermatt

One of the unique aspects of visiting Zermatt is that the village is car-free. Visitors typically arrive by train, and electric taxis or hotel transfers take you to your accommodation.

After arriving at the hotel, the first thing that stood out was the architecture and design. The property has a contemporary alpine style with large glass windows, warm wood accents, and terraces that frame the surrounding mountains.

And of course, if you’re lucky with the weather, you’ll immediately spot the Matterhorn towering above the village.

Our Suite

We stayed in a suite with a private terrace, which gave us beautiful views of the mountains and village.

From the hotel, it’s just a short walk to the Klein Matterhorn gondola, making it easy to get on the mountain quickly in the morning.

Zermatt’s ski area connects to Cervinia in Italy, offering a massive ski domain with stunning alpine scenery.

Pool & Spa

One of the standout features of Matterhorn FOCUS is the heated outdoor pool.

Swimming in a warm pool while surrounded by snowy mountains is a pretty special experience.

The spa area also includes:

It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day skiing.

Dinner in Zermatt

Zermatt is packed with excellent restaurants, from traditional Swiss mountain huts to upscale dining.

Some local specialties worth trying include:

There are plenty of great dining options within walking distance of the hotel.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Matterhorn FOCUS Design Hotel is an excellent base for a luxury ski vacation in Zermatt.

Turtle Beach Barbados Review – Marriott All-Inclusive on the South Coast

Turtle Beach is a Marriott all-inclusive resort located on the south coast of Barbados. During our recent stay we experienced the resort before, during, and after Hurricane Beryl, explored the property, and also visited two sister Marriott properties nearby.

Here is our honest review of the resort, the beach, the food, and whether it’s worth staying here.

Arrival in Barbados

We arrived late at night at Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI), the main airport serving Barbados.

Barbados is a country where cricket is practically a religion, so it was fitting that our visit coincided with the ICC Cricket T20 World Cup Final.

Unfortunately, the arrival experience at the hotel was not ideal.

Despite our late-night arrival being known in advance, the hotel wasn’t fully staffed for check-in. It took about 45 minutes to receive our room keys, which is not a great start after a long flight.

Oceanfront Room

We stayed in an Ocean Front Room, which comfortably accommodates a family of four.

Inside the room you’ll find:

A closet stocked with robes and an umbrella
Standard furnishings typical of older Caribbean resorts
A bathroom with refillable toiletries

While the room was functional, the entire property feels like it’s in need of renovation. The decor and facilities feel dated compared to many modern Caribbean resorts.

However, one thing that absolutely makes up for it is the view.

Incredible Ocean Views

The oceanfront views are spectacular. Waking up and walking out toward the beach each morning was one of the highlights of the stay.

There’s something special about stepping outside and immediately seeing the turquoise water and wide stretch of sand.

Dining at Turtle Beach

Chelonia – The Main Buffet

The primary restaurant at the resort is Chelonia, which serves buffet-style meals.

Breakfast features a made-to-order omelette station, which is quite popular — expect a queue during busy periods.

Dinner options change nightly, which keeps things interesting. The food overall was good but not exceptional, which is fairly typical for many all-inclusive buffets.

Most evenings also include live music, adding to the relaxed Caribbean atmosphere.

The Beach

One of Turtle Beach’s biggest strengths is — unsurprisingly — the beach itself.

The sand is wide and beautiful, with sweeping views of the ocean.

However, our stay coincided with Hurricane Beryl, which created an unusual situation. We experienced the beach before, during, and after the storm.

Before the Hurricane

The beach was absolutely stunning, with clear water and soft sand.

The best section of beach is actually in front of the neighboring Sandals property, where the shoreline is particularly wide and scenic.

After Hurricane Beryl

The hurricane caused some minor damage across the resort, but the biggest impact was on the beach.

Sections of the shoreline had eroded significantly, particularly near the Sandals area.

Despite this, the beach remained beautiful overall and the resort staff worked quickly to restore the property.

Wildlife Around the Resort

One fun surprise throughout the property was the abundance of crabs.

They seem to be everywhere around the resort grounds.

Interestingly:

Turtle Beach has red crabs
Crystal Cove has white crabs

A small but memorable detail of the Barbados ecosystem.

Asiagos – Italian Restaurant

Turtle Beach also offers a sit-down dining option called Asiagos, which serves Italian cuisine.

The restaurant offers a full menu including:

Pasta dishes
Italian classics
A dessert menu

One memorable moment came when ordering a Tartufo Affogato, which was… not exactly served in the traditional way.

Still, it was a pleasant change from buffet dining.

Visiting Sister Properties

One of the perks of staying at Turtle Beach is that guests can also dine at two other Marriott all-inclusive properties nearby:

Waves Resort
Crystal Cove

Dining at these properties is included, but reservations are required through the activities desk.

This adds a lot of variety to the food options during your stay.

Waves Resort

We visited Waves, which is located on the west coast of Barbados.

The resort features a restaurant called Shiso, which serves Asian fusion cuisine.

Some of the dishes we tried included:

Futomaki
Chicken Tikka Masala
Chicken Katsu Chow Mein

The food here felt a bit more refined than at Turtle Beach.

Waves also has a waterfront restaurant called Seascape, though the resort itself does not have much of a beach.

Crystal Cove

We also visited Crystal Cove for lunch.

This resort has a beautiful pool area with a cave bar, which is one of the most distinctive features.

Lunch was served at Reflections, the poolside restaurant with gorgeous ocean views.

The property overall felt very polished and scenic.

Activities at Turtle Beach

Turtle Beach offers a number of activities including:

Tennis on well-maintained courts
Beach and water activities
Live entertainment most evenings

The resort has a lively but relaxed atmosphere suitable for both couples and families.

Final Thoughts

Turtle Beach isn’t the newest or most modern resort in Barbados, and it definitely needs renovation.

However, it still has several strong advantages:

One of the best beaches among the Marriott all-inclusive properties
Beautiful oceanfront views
Access to multiple resorts for dining
Friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere

Cons

Property feels dated
Check-in experience could be better
Buffet food is good but not standout

Overall, Turtle Beach may actually be the best of the three Marriott all-inclusive properties in Barbados, primarily because of its fantastic beach.

If your priority is ocean views and beach access, this resort still delivers.

On our recent ski trip to Courchevel 1850, we stayed at Hotel Carlina, a 5-star ski-in/ski-out property located in one of the most prestigious ski destinations in the world.

Courchevel is arguably France’s most famous ski resort, known for its luxury hotels, extensive terrain, and seamless alpine experience. Naturally, expectations for a 5-star stay here are extremely high.

This review breaks down what worked—and what didn’t.

📍 Location — ★★★★★

The hotel’s location is one of its strongest assets.

Just a couple of switchbacks from the village center
Direct ski-in/ski-out access to the Bellecôte green piste
Easy run down to the main lift and ski school area

For families and convenience, this setup is hard to beat. You can get on the slopes quickly without dealing with long walks or crowded transport.

🎿 Ski Experience — ★★★★★

The in-house ski shop is excellent.

Skis are prepped every morning

This is exactly the kind of service you expect—and want—when skiing in a destination like Courchevel.

🏨 Room & Stay Experience — ★★☆☆☆

We stayed in a family suite with a terrace overlooking the slopes. On paper, this sounds ideal—but execution fell short.

Issues we encountered:

Terrace snow was never cleared during the entire stay
A persistent leak lasted most of the week
Buckets placed in the room detracted significantly from the experience

These are not minor inconveniences—they’re fundamental service failures, especially for a hotel positioning itself as 5-star.

🚐 Shuttle Service — ★★★☆☆

The hotel offers complimentary shuttle vans around Courchevel 1850, which is useful:

Great for getting back after ski lessons or dinner
However, availability is inconsistent
During peak (February holiday week), vans were often unavailable

🍳 Breakfast — ★★★★★

Breakfast was a standout highlight.

Yogurts, smoothies, cereals, pastries
Eggs made to order
Wide, high-quality selection

We were consistently well-fed and ready to hit the slopes each morning.

🏔️ Common Areas — ★★★★☆

The hotel leans into a traditional alpine luxury aesthetic.

Large lounge with slope views
Relaxing and well-designed shared spaces
Slopeside lunch available (not tested during our stay)

🏊 Pool & Spa — ★★☆☆☆

The pool area looks great but doesn’t deliver in practice:

Good size and nice slope views
Pool temperature is too cold
Hot tub is only warm—not hot

For a ski hotel, this is a major miss. Après-ski recovery is a core part of the experience.

🚗 Departure & Logistics — ★★☆☆☆

Our departure highlighted operational issues:

Not enough staff to assist guests
Driveway was not ploughed after snowfall
Cars were buried in snow and struggling to exit

Parking costs €40 + tax per night, supposedly for a covered garage—making this even more frustrating.

⚖️ Final Verdict

Despite a prime location and strong breakfast and ski services, the overall experience fell well below 5-star expectations.

Bottom Line

We would not stay here again.

The fundamentals—room quality, maintenance, and service consistency—need significant improvement to justify the price point and 5-star positioning.
